Filmmaker Hansal Mehta shot back at Twitter trolls, warning them to stop cyber bullying him, after one of his favourite films Newton did not make it to the list of nine films, which have made it to the next round of the 90th Academy Awards.

The filmmaker, in his tweet, wrote, “ Am tempted to use unparliamentary language with all those who are rejoicing and trolling me on the fact that Newton did not make it to the Oscars. Oscars or no Oscars it remains one of the finest films made in our country in a long time.”

Talking to HT, the National award winning filmmaker says, “ My reaction to these trolls is to go get a life. For me Newton still remains one of the best films which has come out of the country and we should celebrate the film rather than being critical.”

Mehta, who has worked with the lead actor of the film Rajkummar Rao in films such as Shahid (2013), CITYLIGHTS (2014) and Aligharh (2015), was one of the first to congratulate the Newton team after it got selected as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards in the foreign language section.

“These cyber trolls are calling me bizarre names. The Oscar jury is not going to change their decision based on what I think about a film and put it back in the selected section. Oscars is anyway a long shot for Indian films,” he says.

Mehta feels it is a great deal for the Amit Masurkar directorial, to represent India on the global platform and not getting an Oscar does not make it any less of a good film.

“Korean films have not made it to the Oscars in 29 to 30 years. No Korean film has ever made it to the Academy short list. Does it take away from the work that is done in Korea?,” he asks, and adds, “It is a big deal that the film went from India, especially this year, when there were 92 entries and every country had some spectacular films.”
