Salman Khan famously releases his films on Eid. Almost all his Eid releases have been blockbusters but this year proved to be an exception. Tubelight, that released on Eid in 2017, highly underperformed, sending shockwaves. The trailer did look a bit ‘thanda’ but almost everyone was of the view that it would achieve commercial success. After all, it had the hit machine Salman Khan and moreover, he was collaborating for the third time with Kabir Khan. Their previous two ventures – Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan – were both blockbusters. However, Tubelight turned out to be a slow flick and not an ideal entertainer of sorts. Audiences didn’t get to see Salman Khan in a massy role or rather in an avatar that they were used to. As a result, despite being released on a long weekend, Tubelight struggled to reach the Rs. 100 crore mark.
At the Da-Bangg The Tour held in Delhi recently, Salman Khan opened up about the box office performance of Tubelight. He made it clear that he still stands by the film and remarked that if the film had not released during the happy occasion of Eid, it might have helped. Salman Khan said, “Tubelight was an amazing film and I make jokes on it but it was a really good film. Actually the film was meant for family audience. So the Eid was not the right time for it to release. It was a very heart wrenching kind of a film where you cry and you feel for the brothers and stuff like that. And Eid or Diwali or Christmas, festive release should always be entertaining. It can be action, romance, comedy but it has be an entertaining film.”
Tubelight also starred Sohail Khan, Matin Rey Tangu, Zhu Zhu and Om Puri.
